There are several cabins and houses scattered around Black Mountain. Just a few people live in this area on a year round basis. The road up to the cabin is initally quite good (graveled/dirt). As the drive progresses up the mountain, the road becomes much more narrow and rutted. A 4WD vehicle is highly recommended.

The fridge and stove/oven run off propane. The fridge is quite old and does not regulate temperature well (it tends to keep food quite cold -- sometimes too cold). We generally bring a large cooler with us and keep fruits and vegetables in the cooler. The pantry does have some canned goods and is fully stocked with utencils and dishes/pots/pans. There is no running water, but we have a large drum with a long garden hose to get gravity feed water to the spigots. That water is not potable, but is fine for washing dishes. Water must be heated first on the stove.
While there is a wonderful spring (the locals call it "chug-a-lug") about 3-miles away, it is recommended that you bring your own drinking water, and use the spring water for dishes and showering (there is a solar shower available).

And now the "nitty gritty"... First off, this cabin retreat is not for everyone. It is for those seeking solace, a change of pace, an opportunity to relax, unwind and slow down. The property is up at over 5,000 feet in elevation and is quite hilly. There is no other heat source than the wood stove - no direct running water - trips to the spring for cleaning are needed. Carrying in potable water supplies and whatever else one needs for sustainance is required. The closest town is Sumpter, about 15-miles away. Baker (population of about 10,000) is about 24 miles away.
The cabin has a small solar panel and does have a few electrical outlets. There is a radio/CD player and a small bookshelf. There are a handful of board games, paper and pencils. There is a small zipline (set up for children), some wonderful swings and a delightful hammock. Please be aware that there are inherent risks with the property and the use of these items. Please take all necessary precautions and remember that while there is a first aid kit in the cabin, the nearest hospital/medical facility is in Baker.
